01 — ORCHESTRA

In the orchestra pit.

As Principal Bassoon of the Bavarian State Orchestra, Moritz Winker works at the intersection of opera, symphonic repertoire and chamber-like ensemble playing.

The orchestra pit demands a particular kind of attention: listening across distance, reacting instantly, supporting voices on stage and shaping long dramatic arcs from within.

04 — BIOGRAPHY

Portrait of Moritz Winker

Moritz Winker

Moritz Winker has been Principal Bassoon of the Bavarian State Orchestra at the Bavarian State Opera since 2009. Based in Munich, his musical life is centred on the opera house — a place where orchestral playing, chamber music and the stage meet every day. He has appeared as a soloist with the Bavarian State Orchestra under Kent Nagano and, in 2024, performed Richard Strauss’s Concertino with Nicola Hattwig and the Munich Symphony Orchestra under Joseph Bastian.

Alongside his work at the Bavarian State Opera, Winker has performed with orchestras including the Munich Philharmonic and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, most recently in Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony under Franz Welser-Möst. Since 2019, he has taught bassoon at the University of Music Würzburg and has given masterclasses in New York, Dresden and São Paulo. His work as a performer and teacher is shaped by the same questions: how sound is created, how technique can become more natural, and how musicians can find greater freedom in demanding situations.
